Renewing Trident angered some, and worried more.What’s the purpose of our nuclear arsenal?. Some of us have long warned of the other major threat outside of internationl terrorism and its state sponsors: Russia. Lenin and Stalin’s regimes destroyed the rule of law in the Soviet Union, their collapse gave way to a gangster state, a kleptocracy with fabulous resources, a devastated environment, a brutalised and brutalising army. Now the accidents of geology have handed unlimited wealth and power to the inheritors of the infamous KGB who, in a grotesque inversion of the rise by merit, have floated like scum to the top. The Russian Federation, Europe’s principal source for cyber criminals, pornographers, and human traffickers, perpetuating a foreign policy that started with ice-picks and continues with polonium-210, is bent on conjuring its dead empire, reducing millions who’ve scarcely tasted their precarious freedom to a new serfdom.
Now that was a good conference!

Last week I took the Labour campaign for East Worthing and Shoreham to the party’s Annual Conference in Bournemouth. I was lucky enough to be called to speak in the debate on prosperity and work on Tuesday afternoon - the day after Prime Minister Gordon Brown gave his fantastic address in which he set out his vision for our country.
