Genius, Pure Genius…

The common thread through the ‘Coalition’s’ actions and proposals so far, has been a petty and spiteful revenge attack on what it calls ‘Political Correctness’. PC, shorthand for most everything that Labour did and stands for - that the State has the essential role in administering the standards and setting the targets that will not be achieved by individuals, or organisations, acting on their own. Or in other words, “They’ve been bossing us about for 13 years, now we’re going to trash the Nursery”.A sort of dirty protest from the infants.
In this brave new world, liberated from PC, we’re free to observe that Michael Gove is the strangest looking being since the aliens in Men in Black were revealed - and that’s before he sheds his disguise.
That said, his free schools is a genius idea. Breathtakingly simple, it solves in one stroke the problems endemic in our Public Service behemoths: bureaucracy, inefficiency, unaccountability, (the whole Nanny State).
If you don’t like, or don’t agree with, the schools in your area - Start Your Own! The S...e (shush, don’t say that word), rather, all of us collectively, but as individuals, through the tax system, will pay for it; the funding to be administered by the (S...e, shush), individuals that some of us, individually, but collectively, have elected to (tell us what to do, shush) implement our decisions on our behalf.
The full beauty of the idea should urgently be shone on the other expensive, unresponsive, under-performing Public Services:
Hospital killing not curing? Simple, get some patients together and set up your own! Free at last from those annoying bureaucratic standards and pointless performance targets. You can probably make use of one those Victorian Hospitals, abandoned when those shiny new, horribly overpriced, PFI funded NHS replacements opened. Bound to be better (and cheaper).
Police not up to the job? Simple. Start your own Militia! That’ll teach the yobs!
The Justice system too lenient, too expensive? Easy. Set up your own neighbourhood Kangaroo Court. Most people are in favour of capital punishment. Justice at last!
And what about the Inland Revenue? Ah, there’s a thought.... You see. The concept is beautifully simple, rich in possibilities, the first lump of concrete from the Berlin Wall of our oppressive, Nanny State. And when we’ve torn down the wall and given the Stasi their marching orders (with reduced pensions), who will pay for reconstruction? You’ve got it! The Voluntary Sector!
